Reciprocal Linking is Bad for Your Business Website Health

Thursday, October 15th, 2009

As small business owners, we need to find traffic for our websites from wherever we can get it — assuming, of course, that the source is relevant traffic. Irrelevant traffic actually HURTS your website rank in the search engines so we don’t want that. For that reason, we are not fans of reciprocal linking schemes, link farms, etc.

Case in point. I recently met with a new client in Los Angeles who needed to market their small business website. They had previously enjoyed a Page Rank of 5 for their website. Over the past two years, it has dropped to a Page Rank of 3. This was due to a number of factors, but chief among those was the fact that they had been forced into a reciprocal linking arrangement with an unscrupulous vendor. It benefited the vendor tremendously, as they were able to show the search engines that their site was being ranked to from a PR5 website; it made the vendor’s site more “buoyant” (it made it rank higher) in the search engines. The moral of the story is, be very careful if someone offers to do you the “favor” of creating a link to your site, in exchange to linking from yours. It could be detrimental to your website’s Search Engine health.

Nevertheless, you should look for opportunities to receive links from relevant websites whenever possible. It might not seem fair to “take” a link without giving one back, but there are other ways you can help the linking website. If they have a satellite website, you could consider linking to that in the body of one of your posts — relevant topic / contextual link / deep link to the satellite site. Just be careful that the link partner understands that directly linking from the satellite site to their main site will not be nearly as good as if they link in a broad circle of 10 sites before returning to the main site. This is somewhat sophisticated SEO / linking strategy that we’re sharing, so it’s not for everyone to implement on their own. It also implies that you have up to 10 web properties that are all somewhat related that can be daisy chained together… Again, not for everyone. But definitely for businesses that want to insure being on Page 1 on Google. ;)

It requires a lot of time, attention and planning to implement a 10-site daisy chain strategy, and we encourage you to go into that with plenty of forethought. Take the time to not only analyze and eliminate any chance of reciprocal linking or neighbor linking possibilities in the chain, and also insure that whomever in your organization will be managing your website network understands this strategy. A small business SEO Policy is a very smart investment in resources. It takes relatively little time for a website to fall in page rank, and a significantly greater amount of time to gain rank — especially after it is lost.

The underlying issue of Page Rank has been said to be overrated, and it’s largely a symbol of the site’s overall bouyancy in the search engines… it’s not necessarily a goal for a web owner to achieve a particular page rank; it’s more of a barometer or guideline than a definitive benchmark or landing point. The website owner with a page rank of 0 would certainly agree that a page rank of 5 would represent that his/her traffic has achieved more traffic (visitors), more conversions and more leads & sales. That’s really the benchmark we’re aiming for.

An Introduction To Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)

Wednesday, October 7th, 2009

You cannot just practise SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) without some kind of experience or information to go on. The better information you have to go on will mean the better you are at optimizing your websites content for good search engine results & rankings. I have some tips and tricks you can use to start your SEO adventure and for the best results I’d suggest finishing off your website prior to submitting it to search engines, so no incompleted websites or content should be acceptable.

1. One of the best tips many SEO professionals will give you is to not stuff your content with keywords you’re trying to target, but instead place the recommended amount of keywords which is around the 4% – 7% of your websites content – so the more content you have will result in more keywords according to the percentage.

2. Take advantage of the heading tag. Insert a reasonable amount of keywords you’re trying to target with the important phrases and descriptions.

3. Pick your keywords carefully. There is no chance in this world you’re going to get to the top of page one on Google if you’re trying to target highly competitive keywords such as “Coding” – but instead use more realistic keywords and phrases such as “Coding tutorials” or “Easy coding tutorials” and then in the long run who knows you may well be a big competitor to others for the keyword “Coding” as an example.

4. Many Search Engine Optimisation experts will tell you that content is king. If you do not have enough content (being content that is well written and uses your keywords wisely) then you’ll not get very far when looking to get increased rankings.

5. Back links are essential and should be worked on day in day out if you’re to rank highly for competitive search terms. The most highly ranked websites often have thousands of back links which ranks them well in big search engines. A good place to get started when building links is to submit to website directories and blogs.

My New Website

Introduction

When I decided I needed a website for my business I had no idea of the planning involved. Like most people, I thought web design meant deciding on the graphics and the look of the pages and then by some magic it would all happen.I simply hadn’t had any exposure to the planning and build process which I now know to be extensive!

I have a friend who is in the business of SEO web design and website development so I approached him for a quote. As a complete novice who is computer literate up to a point, I was amazed at the depth of initial questioning required to find out exactly what my requirements were.I realise now it is akin to building a house or other huge project where it is all in the preparation.

I had no idea about the various elements and the structure of the site and I found it mind blowing when I learnt about the amount of work involved. So I thought other people would be interested to know more about this complicated process particularly if you consider yourself a non computer person and have to get a website built. I have asked my SEO friend to supply the technical information for this article.

Stages in the Process

Target Audience

Before building a website there are important questions to consider. I was asked who would be my potential audience. Who are my customers likely to be? Would they be children, businesses, home owners, sales people, parents or teenagers and so on?

The Objective of the Website

Then I was asked, what was the purpose of my website? Did I want to sell services on line or use it to market my business and get more leads for potential customers? Maybe I would want to use the site as an online brochure to showcase my services. Another possibility was to use the website to foster a community so that I was in contact with other like-minded people, with chat rooms, online discussions and being supported by advertising on the site. This didn’t really apply to my business, although I did think about offering to advertise allied services!

I hadn’t quite realised the scope of a website but as I was asked these questions it became clear that a lot of careful thought went into the preparation before building a website. I realised it is like any project, the majority of the work is in the preparation, a bit like decorating really!

Creating a Site Map

The importance of creating a site map is to get it clear in your mind of all the pages you will have on your website so you can prepare the content for each page and begin to design the flow through the website, such as when a user adds a product to their basket, then enters their delivery and billing address and makes the credit card payment in the correct order.

In the same way that in building a property you must have drawings, so with building a website you must have a site map, everything else, the services if you like, will require the sitemap to first of all be in place, such as SEO plans, copy writing and navigation.

The aim is to make the site as user friendly as possible so that there are no barriers to getting into the website or making a purchase. For that reason often user name and passwords are set for the customer so that they are not put off making a purchase by having to register.

For a non e-commerce site things are simpler with a contact form which allows you to receive enquiries by email without publishing your email address on the website, thus avoiding spam.Web forms can also validate the information before you receive it, so ensuring that the phone number provided does not contain words, and that the email address is in the correct format, for example. These things may sound very technical to us lay-folk but I assure you everything has to be decided in advance before starting on the construction of the site.

Your Domain Name

Choosing a domain name is often quite a problem because every name you initially come up with will almost certainly have been taken. Domain names ending in .com are by far the most popular and internationally recognised; the snag is that it’s very popularity means that the majority of the shorter names have probably already been registered. However, you can usually think of some domain name that is available, which is much less time consuming than trying to purchase a previously registered domain name from its existing owner, most of the time just contacting them, and getting a reply is a challenge.

So looking at names with endings such as .net; .org .co.uk or .info may be able to provide you with the domain name you would like to have. When choosing your domain name it is very important to include one or more of your keywords if possible as this can apparently help with search engine rankings. So although the name of your business is the obvious choice for a domain name, it is not necessarily the only option. You will no doubt have heard the Hoover/vacuum cleaner story, where Hoover is actually a brand name of a certain type of vacuum cleaner, but these days most people still say they are doing the ‘hoovering’ ! This is an important concept to bear in mind when choosing your domain name as hoovers4u.com might be a much better domain name than discountvaccuumcleaners.com, also vacuum is a tricky word to spell so think about things like that too. Also how easy is it to give out your domain name over the telephone for example? Classic examples of this are paydotcom.com and Slashdot.org confusing or what?

Copy

The next stage is preparing the copy. This is not the design of your website – just the words and visuals you want to have one each of the pages.

Having gathered all the above information you will need to decide what imagery you want to use within the website content. As we all know, a picture speaks a thousand words and remains in people’s memory far longer than just words. It is a popular concept that people don’t read, and is even more true on the web today, so use as many images, diagrams, cartoons and illustrations as possible.

For each image you could also have a caption, as the caption of an image is the next ‘most read’ words on the page after the page title. Images and their captions need to be clickable. When you click on a picture it should take you to the next stage of the process such as the sale page or placing an enquiry if your website is for lead generation. All images should also have alternative text or alt tags. Alt tags will display the hover text when you position your mouse over the picture, but also they are used by screen readers to assist visually impaired users know what the image is about. See the section below on Accessibility and Compliance.

Website Design

Finally we come to the design of your website.

With web design unlike something technical, it is not black and white, it is up to the person viewing the designs if they like it or not. This can make the actual design stage a bit tricky because there is no clear right or wrong.

There are a number of ways to approach website design but ultimately you need to create a design brief for the designer(s) to work from. Look at other websites and your competitor’s websites to find out what you like or dislike. The design brief should give reference to the logo, any existing brand guidelines or schemes and fonts and colour schemes, and should also detail which pages of the website that the designer is being tasked with creating visuals for. See the Sitemap section below.

The very best results will be achieved by using a graphic designer, and beware – not all graphic designers are the same. A graphic designer who designs specifically for print is working in a different discipline than a graphic designer who designs for screen and specifically the web. So choose your designer carefully, look at other work that person has done and determine whether or not you like their style.

If you are working in the big time and budget allows, use multiple graphic designers who have all been given the same design brief and request three concept designs from each designer. If the client themselves also do a graphic design, even if it’s a back of the envelope scribble, you will then have 10 concept designs. The next step is to get them all together and select the preferred elements from each design. Then give the work to the selected graphic designer to work up as the final artwork. Once you have reviewed the final visuals the artwork files will then be provided to the developer, usually in layered Photoshop files.

The artwork should be finalised and agreed on by everybody before construction of the site begins. Otherwise it can lead to costly and time consuming changes and frustration for both the developer and the client.

Navigation

Another important consideration when building a website is how you want your navigation to work. You can have links within the content of your website, in the text, so there are not just links from the menu. You will need to decide whether the links will open into a new window, retaining your original page open or just change the page to the one clicked on. Next time you go online, you will realise how much thought has gone into the way in which a website works.

Production

Finally the preparation has been done and the site is ready to be built. Now for the more technical stuff! You will need to have decided which programming language to use to build the website. There are two main types for developing a website, one is Unix based, and the other is Windows based. Each one has advantages and disadvantages. If you are starting from scratch then it probably won’t matter, so you can go with the preference of your professional doing the work. My website is built on the Unix platform (apparently!) which is the same as many of the more well known websites such as Ebay, Facebook, Google and Amazon. Also your website hosting must be compatible with the development language with which your website is built in.

Work In Progress

The best way to build a website and be able to monitor work in progress is on the web server where the site is ultimately going to live. This way, those involved in reviewing the work can see work in progress and provide feedback throughout the development.

Going live

The moment of excitement comes when your site finally is published to the internet and you see the results of all the thought that has gone into the whole process.

Having put in many hours rewriting mission statements and demolition legislation texts for our demolitions website I was thrilled when the site eventually went live.

As soon as the site has gone live there is no substitute for real world testing though, so ask as many of your friends and colleagues to view the website from their own offices and give feedback..

Accessibility and Compliance

The website has to meet the current standards for website coding and doing so insures that disabled users, such as the visually impaired, can still access the entire website if they are using a Braille web browser. It is also a good idea to also discuss conformance moving forward, particularly if you have a web content management system, because and accessible of compliant site may become un-accessible after six months of being edited by you if you do not add or edit the website content in an accessible manner.

Unforeseen Items

There are always things that arise in any project which you suddenly realise you have forgotten, so no matter how well the web designer prepares and asks the right questions, there is bound to be a last minute change of mind or addition to the site. The main aim is to minimise the number of glitches that might arise because they aren’t calculated in at the start and they could cause extra costs and delays on the date of the website going live.As a general rule it is always a good idea to get he site live to the original plans and then look at an update after it has gone live, unless it is a very small deviation from the initial plans.

Reporting and Monitoring

Once your website is up and running, you might like to know how many people visit your website and from that number how many actually buy the products or place an enquiry. From these statistics you can work out the ratio of hits to sales and gradually make changes to improve the ratios. There are some reliable statistics packages such as Google Analytics or Web-Stat.com which allow you to collect and review website visitor data in near real time. All you need to do this is to have a small block of code inserted into each web page on your site.Using web stats programs is also invaluable for SEO keyword reviews after your site has been live for a while because it tells you what phrases have been typed into the search engines by users before they visited your website.

Another useful service that Web-stat.com provides is to monitor the website and warn you by email or text message if the site is not reachable.

Marketing

Once the website is live there are lots of things you can do to market your product or service. The first step is to submit it to the search engines and at the same time write articles, and press releases. Getting links to the site from forums, blogs and other social networking spaces are other options. For more on this subject ask your designer about SEO, remember that’s search engine optimisation.

How to be Found on the Web

One of the first questions I was asked was, ‘Do you want it to be found by Google the main search engine?’ If I did then there was a whole process of establishing Keywords. So finding the best keywords are vital if you want to be found in Google. He says there are two main types of keywords. The first is the trophy, or generic, keyword for the industry which in my industry is simply ‘demolition’. The second kind of keyword is the long tail keyword. These are not searched for as frequently but if you can get a match then they are much more likely to convert into customers. A good example of this in my industry is ‘factory demolition company Derby’. So it is very important to do a lot of research on keywords to find both those that are the most popular and the most specific. Generally most users only look at the first page of results so you will want to get your website promoted so as to get on this page for your chosen keywords. By using a keyword research tool such as the keyword lookup in the Google Web Master Tools kit you can find the single most popular keyword for your industry.

Conclusion

Wheww. What an amazing amount of work! I hadn’t realised when I started the process of getting a website up and running, how complicated it all is and how many factors you have to consider before even designing the website. The word web design is really a misnomer, as people often think it’s just about the graphic design on the home page, and the branding of the product. Unless you are a computer whizz, most people have no idea how much goes into designing and building a website and the systems that support the work you want it to do. I hope that this article gives you an understanding and insight into the whole process of website development from start to finish.

Using a SItemap on your website is important

Saturday, July 25th, 2009

For many people, a sitemap is often thought to be pointless in the act of constructing a website, and that’s really true if the sole reason you make one is for the sake of it.  Employing a well designed sitemap on your website is basically very useful and in my opinion, very important.  Especially re search engine optimisation.  There are several reasons why building a sitemap for your site could be a massive advantage.

Navigation

As the name suggests, the sitemap truly does act as a map of your website, if you build it that way.  This may be helpful to visitors to your site if they are on the lookout for something particularly that may not be obviously available on the default page, or on the page which they entered your internet site on.  Also, if your website is particularly large, many folks find having a helicopter view of how it all fits together will help them know how to find everything they are searching for on your internet site.

Overall picture of the site’s ‘theme’.

As quickly as your visitors to your website look at the sitemap, they’ll get the final idea of what your website is all about awfully quickly .  This can save time, for your visitor, as they do not need to troll thru a lot of pages to get an understanding of what it is you are attempting to achieve.

SEO

What happens when you build a good sitemap, is that you are actually making a single page on your website which has a link to every other page on your internet site.  This makes it far easier for the search engines to investigate your site and it helps to have all the pages on your site indexed ( listed ) by the search engines.  It’s important for SEO, that the sitemap is able to be navigated to from your homepage, so be sure there’s a link to the sitemap on the homepage of your internet site.

A well arranged site.

By creating a sitemap, it lets you have a very good top level view of how your website is put together.  That means that when you add new pages to your internet site, it can be reasonably simple to see the best place to put it, just by having a look at your sitemap.

Building a sitemap for particularly enormous websites is crucial for all of the reasons I’ve mentioned here.  It is surely worth making the effort.

For more help with SEO services including search engine friendly site design either from the start or as a revamp.

Good search engine optimisation will get you a large amount of qualified focused consumers to your internet site.

How are your competitors doing it?

Thursday, June 18th, 2009

How many times have you looked at your best keyword search result page only to find that one of your competitors has outranked you? Just how are they doing this? Is there something you can do to leap frog them?

I scratched my head on this issue more than once before I finding someone with the answers. I am talking about Brad Callen. Brad has some good material on how to determine what your competitors are doing to get those high rankings in the search engines. He has even written a tool to reduce the amount of manual labor it takes to figure it out.

His tool is called SEO Elite. This tool does many things that will help you rank better than your competition. I have purchased this tool and use it to get my page rankings up. With his tool, you can determine where your competition is getting their in-bound links. You can find potential link partners and send out email invitations to link with/to you. One of my favorite options is to see where my pages are ranking in the various search engines with a history of past performance. This allows me to see how my latest change to my page has affected my search engine results rankings.

You likely already know how to find many of the things this software will do for you. However, how much is your time worth? You can set this software to start the research and walk away. While you are away doing other valuable tasks for your business, SEO Elite will be plugging away doing the grudge work of getting you the answers.

There is one thing I wish Brad had done differently with his tool. That is SEO Elite is a Microsoft Windows only application. I run Linux so I would love to see a Linux version of the tool but I do not think that will happen anytime soon. Besides, it does save me a lot of manual labor.

The Focus of Search Engine Optimization

Sunday, May 10th, 2009

If you are unfamiliar of the term search engine marketing, it might be good to provide a bit of an introduction before we dig in deep. Search Engine Marketing refers to marketing strategies that revolve around the search engines like Google, Yahoo and MSN.

It all started a long time ago when the web was just a baby, Google was trying to figure out a fair way to judge content and things were unclear at the time. In this day and age search engine marketing requires a different type of marketer, someone that is willing to uncover every rock and explore all the options.

SEM is the process of implementing strategies that could include purchasing advertising from Google Adwords, running contests on your website to gain traffic and generally anything that gets a buzz going and gets customers through your system. Maybe we should take a minute to explore article marketing and copywriting.

The best way to be successful with your article is to do research before hand to make sure that the search traffic is sufficient when you start promoting your content. So by now you have probably found your target keyword, assessed the quantity of web traffic and done your article research. Go ahead and make the article title and URL the same as the keyword or at bare minimum include your keywords in the article title.

The general rule in regard to search engine optimization is to place your keywords in content no more than once per hundred words to be safe and not get slapped by Google for keyword stuffing. Please keep in mind that this is an extremely basic discussion of proper onsite SEO and SEM techniques, in reality there are many more that can include things like META tags and description and internal linking. In addition to onsite techniques, more importantly you will have to be good at networking and approaching people, its not called the “world wide web” for nothing…

Once your site is established, people will actively reach out to you in an attempt to exchange links but it will take some time and effort to get there, until then you may have to ask people for favors or find ways to encourage them to link to you, this is extremely important when trying to become a master at ways for teens to make money… There are several names for the same thing in the internet marketing business, and if you want to earn money online, you will need to learn the lingo. Commonly people refer to terms such as SEO, SEM, Search Engine Optimization, Search Engine Marketing, Page Rank etc…

Many people don’t understand that beyond any other methods, you have to spend time or find shortcuts in regard to generating quality anchor text backlinks. It doesn’t matter if you want to be a seattle portrait photographer or an astronaut… Building links is the lifeblood of external SEO and if you are a popular or a manufacturer, getting attention is difficult and it needs to be done at a rate that is equal or greater to that of your competitors for the same keywords if you want to stay on top of the rankings… Once you get closer to the first page, things can get extremely difficult.

Just to recap, the two ways to improve your results in the search engines are by mastering your content and producing it in a way that is friendly to the Google spiders and building an incredible number of links and content that inspires people to link to you freely.Focus on the fundamentals and ignore what everyone else says, most people are just trying to sell something to you and very few will give you the information on a silver platter for free.

How To Make A Living Online And Keep Yourself Healthy

Wednesday, January 14th, 2009

Making a living off internet marketing is a dream a lot of people have. Of course, building up a proper online business takes a lot of work, which is why many people try to take shortcuts. They try to find the “latest and greatest trick” to making money, they buy all the latest products, try everything and give up easily. A lot of people also go for blackhat SEO, where they basically try to manipulate search engines and spam links everywhere. The reality is that the vast majority of internet marketers making tons of money don’t do any of this stuff – rather, they focus on creating real business models that actually help people. In many cases you can make way more money working with the system rather than trying to exploit it.

Also, another thing that a lot of the top earners do is create their own product, whereas people that don’t make much tend to promote products as an affiliate. If you have your own product then you can enjoy having hundreds of affiliates sending traffic to you in all kinds of ways, which makes it a lot easier. Making a living off internet marketing is easier when you have passive traffic coming in. Affiliates tend to work a lot harder for fewer returns than product owners do.

Also, remember that internet marketing can cause health problems if you spend all day in front of your computer. Therefore, it can help if you do some weight loss stuff so you keep in shape. Just remember to see your doctor before following any medical advice you see online.
